Though they may have started life on the fairway, golf carts today are used for far more than just moving from hole to hole. Golf carts see use everywhere you can think of, from college, business, and residential campuses to your favorite hunting grounds. Golf carts can even help people with limited mobility to participate in community activities and travel around their neighborhood with ease!

Whether your golf cart sticks near the green, is covered in mud, or helps you get around, there’s always a way to customize it to fit your needs. To help you get started, we here at Carts Gone Wild wanted to put together a few of our favorite ways to make your ride your own.

Make It Your Style

Golf cart aesthetics aren’t limited to “a box on wheels at a country club,” though that’s still an option if that speaks to you. After all, style lies in the eye of the beholder! Maybe you want to stencil your name or words that are meaningful to you onto the cart, or just apply decals or bumper stickers to add a bit of flash. If you want the cart’s silhouette to be a bit closer to a traditional car’s, you could add what’s called a “Monarch front” which rounds out the shape a bit and adds additional storage space for supplies, tools, and gear.

Others like to repaint the exterior entirely to give it a color scheme that they enjoy. Still others add a metallic shell to make their cart look like a roadster or other vintage car. Some people even modify their carts to look like miniature limousines! The sky’s the limit when it comes to your golf cart’s style.

Beef It Up

Golf carts are known for a lot of things, and powerful engines aren’t typically on the list. That can change if you have the time, money, and urge to change it! This is especially important if you want your cart to be street-legal, which requires more power than most factory-fresh carts can pack. The standard golf cart reaches speeds of around 20 miles per hour, but a properly modified cart could manage speeds up to 40 miles per hour. To accomplish this on an electric cart you can overclock batteries, add a second battery, or install larger and stronger batteries.

On a gas cart, you may need to tinker with the engine a bit to bypass factory-installed speed caps, or perhaps install bigger gears or just a bigger engine to achieve the speeds you want. If you don’t have a lot of experience with either gas or electric golf cart engines, we recommend getting an expert mechanic or technician’s help. You’ll also want to read up a bit on the laws in your area regarding what makes a vehicle street-legal.

Heavy-duty leaf springs can also help your cart handle heavier cargoes and rougher terrain. These improve the vehicle’s suspension and are relatively modular in nature, meaning that if they need repairing or replacing, you’ll only need to repair a part rather than the entire suspension system. If you’re carrying numerous passengers or a lot of material, leaf spring suspension will keep your cart in good shape for longer and will make the ride much smoother.

Other Accessories

There are hosts of other accessories, add-ons, and upgrades you can add to your golf cart to make it look the way you want or just make it more functional. To save some times, here are a few of our favorites:

  • LED headlights & tail lights to make a cart street-legal and improve illumination in the dark or poor weather conditions
  • Stereo systems so you can play music, podcasts, or just the radio while you’re driving around
  • Fold-down seating at the read of the vehicle to carry a couple of extra passengers, which can be folded away when all you need is some cargo space
  • Larger or specialized tires to increase speed and maneuverability, or to allow your cart to go off-roading
  • Seat belts for safety, which is necessary for street-legal carts and a good idea if you’re upgrading the cart’s performance
  • Windshields to provide protection from the wind, debris, and precipitation
  • A horn to help alert pedestrians or other vehicles to your presence

We hope this helped you turn your cart into the vehicle of your dreams! If you want more customization advice, or you’re looking for a cart to customize, contact us at Carts Gone Wild! We proudly serve the people of Evansville and Indianapolis, Indiana—let us serve you today!
